Need help with random acceleration issues

I own a 2007 Mini Cooper S 6-speed manual transmission and over the last few months have had an acceleration issue that is progressively getting worse. What's even more frustrating is the fact that the issue isn't always consistent.

Symptoms: Sometimes when accelerating it feels that there is no boost (don't have a boost gauge), the RPMs sky rocket without affecting the acceleration as much as you would naturally assume. Feels almost as if I am still partcially in neutral when I go to accelerate. I'm not sure if its a fuel pump, throttle, mechancial or electrical issue. When I have the cruise control on and I'm approaching a hill, as the car increases the throttle to maintain speed it "bogs" out and cuts the cruise control halfway through the process.

I'm looking for any help I can get. Before giving in and taking this to the dealer, I'd like to look at things myself or at least have a good head on my shoulders so the dealer can't push me around.

Appreciate your help!!

Sounds like the clutch may be slipping.

RPM increase & no speed increase, on a MT = clutch slipping

What they said. How many miles? You can verify that the clutch is going by setting the parking brake, putting the transmission in gear and releasing the clutch slowly with no throttle. If the engine doesn't bog and stall then you've got a slipping clutch.

She only has 41,000 miles, and I just did your clutch test...it bog shakes and the engine dies. Any other suggestions?

Put a OBDII scanner or an approved MINI-protocol scanner (like Bavarian Technic) to see what fault codes are present?
Have you complete basic preventative maintenance like spark plug replacement?
Are you correctly using premium fuel that's required in the 'S'-models?

I had a very similar problem on my S2K at high rpms, did not bog down or slip at low rpms as indicated by the clutch test. It turned out it was very early signs of clutch slippage. Had it replace with a twin disc, perfect after that.
