Oil change this past weekend...

On Saturday the 16th, I had the oil changed in my 2009 Cooper with 48,000 miles on it. I got home, turned the car off then on and realized they didn't reset the oil change interval computer.
I called them (Universal City MINI) and they told me how to do it. I did it successfully. It said my next oil change was due in 15,000 miles in 06/2013

The MINI sat from that point Saturday until today at 5:30am. Now it says I have an oil change due in 10,000 miles in 01/2013.

I will say that when they changed the oil, they found the old oil to be clumpy, so they added a detergent to clean things up a bit.

Any ideas why this would change from 15K to 10K, and from 1 year to 6 months?

I have no idea why it would change on you so drastically like that, maybe it will go back up.

To be honest though, I don't know how anyone could wait 10-15,000 miles to change their oil.....

+1 Especially after they told you it was "clumpy". I would change at 5k, or at least 7,500 if I were you. It's cheap insurance. A lot of the issues around here are oil related, or lack of attentiveness. Oil is #1 priority in the longevity of these engines.

It might go back up, I did an oil change on mine when it showed 8000 miles left on the service. However a few days later for some reason it showed up 0 on the service (indicating that it was due a service immediately).

A while later it went back to 8000 miles.

Its probably something to do with the sensor that logs oil 'life' maybe some gunk that was released when the oil was changed got into the sensor and it read as the oil was worn out.

I would just keep an eye on it for some time. I also agree with drewstermalloy that you should change more frequently than mini suggest. The fact that the old oil was 'clumpy' is a red flag to me.

Thanks all. I will keep an eye on that number, check my oil weekly and plan to change it at 5,000 miles.

Or maybe 7500.
