I've had my 2009 MCS stick for 1 week now, one thing I'm not digging too much is how 'grabby' the brake are. I'm used to more modulation from my brakes (IE more linearity in how much force is applied Vs how much braking I get out).

Is there a brand of brake pad I can switch to which will give me better modulation? I'm guessing something harder? A side benefit might be lower dust on my wheels, the suckers get covered in dust very quickly.

I generally drive quite modestly, not hardcore racer style.

I searched some more and found some useful threads. I bought some Akebono pads for my car and I'll report back...

 

We have Akebonos on both of our Minis and we've been very happy with them. I cannot speak to track performance but on the street, they have been excellent, and the days of having dirty black wheels has passed forever. We have almost 40K miles on the R56 and about 30K on the R50, and neither is in need of replacement anytime soon.

I think you'll like them. BTW, they are slotted for the brake wear sensor so there is no issue there.

 

I was having the same concern on our '09 that we got a month ago. I went to the Euro Akebono ceramics and am very pleased. That initial "grabiness" is gone and the are much easier to modulate. Went with Powerslot slotted rotors too.

 

I put the pads on all 4 wheels yesterday and had a long drive. Brakes have better modulation now and I'll find out this week what the brake dust is like...

 

Well I put more miles on the pads and they are really good. The modulation is excellent, the brake dust is around 10x less than the stock mini pads. So about 10 days of buildup on the akebono's equals about 1 days worth on the stock pads.

I'd certainly recommend these pads to others!

 

I have a 2009 hardtop base model, I'm at 32K miles and have never changed brakes or rotors from the stock parts that came with it. I just bought the Euro Akebono front and rear brake pads but was wondering if they require a special rotor or can just be applied to my stock ones?
