R50/53 Italian Job = Italian Minis
Just realized there are more Mini models in Italy than in the USA.
They offer:
MINI Cabrio (convertible coming soon to the US)
MINI ONE (this one got me wanting to find out more, apparently it is a very basic model as it is priced in Italy @ 15.5K euros or roguhly $17K) Saw the ONE badge and I said WHAT IS UP WITH THAT???
MINI D (Diesel job) Have yet to see one.
MINI
MINI COOPER S

I was one of a few lucky MCS owner's to get my MINI while in Italy. I noticed not too many Italian MINI owners have the MCS. I got to motor on the narrow, winding Italian roads for about a month before I came back stateside, that was a blast.

Yes, I'm so glad you brought this up because this is exactly why Cooper owners bristle when our cars are referred to as "plain." They're simply not. The U.S. market is the only place (...I think) where only the higher hp, tuned MINIs were released....so we in the States might have a false sense that Coopers are the "plain" (....bristle) model and it was never so. The Cooper name is, and always has been, attached to tuned cars. In Europe, a MINI Cooper is a tuned version of the MINI One. The MINI D is an altogether different beast w/ a Toyota diesel engine.
I think in general it benefits MINI culture if we all come to a fuller understanding of the range of MINIs available and how appropriatley designed they are for different motorers with different styles in different places. So please, please don't refer to MINI Coopers as "plain." In MINI-speak such a statement is a faux pas.
Not that this thread hit a nerve or anything...
