I have a 2006 MCS with only 22,000 miles. I noticed oil on the front of the engine which is coming from the crank position sensor o-ring. The check engine light has come on and is throwing the 2096 code (lean). I decided to pull the front of the car off to replace the sensor o-ring and to replace the green supercharger intake gasket to try to solve both problems. When I pulled the intake tube off, the green gasket was saturated with oil and there was a small amount of oil in the intake tube and SC.
My question, is oil in the intake normal or is this coming from the rear compartment of the SC?
I didn't really want to pull the SC off at 22,000 miles but maybe I should change the SC oil while the front end is off.

 

I think it is normal, mine had some in it. Usually people run engine degreaser through the intercooler then rinse it and dry it out good. (blow out with air hose)

 

Yes, the oil is normal. It's caused by piston blow-by and is inherent in any car. While not threatening (with preventative maintenance) it will eventually build up a residue inside the engine and degrade performance. You can add a catch can to the system to reduce the oil through the intake system. I have one on my Challenger and it removes 2 oz of oil every couple of months (maxed at 4 oz in 6k miles to date). Some other owners have removed half a can (guesstimate a quarter of a quart) in a month. As soon as I can find the right one I like, I'll have one on my wife's MCS, just haven't taken time to find the one I like.

 

Make a catch can with a short length of black PVC, two end caps, a couple of threaded barb fittings and a radiator petcock. Drill two holes for the barbed fittings in one end cap and one hole in the other for the petcock. Once you've cemented the fittings in place, then cement the end caps to the short length of PVC. You can use a stainless steel band clamp to hold it in place with the petcock on the bottom, then attach your oil-proof hoses to the appropriate lines. Every few months, I use a discarded spray can top to drain any collected oil out. "Don't need no stinkin' sight glass!"

 

Thanks for your responses. Glad to hear that the oil is normal. I think the catch can is a great idea. Will definitely get one after seeing the amount of oil accumulating in the intake tube.

 

Good catch cans have baffles inside to help keep the crud in.
