R50/53 I thought I knew everything about my MINI, but what the heck
I discovered these strange foam vents in the boot today while cleaning out the MINI for driving school. (Please ignore the accumulation of St. Bernard Fur)
What the heck are they for?
My guess is to vent hydrogen gas from the battery box?

These vents are for the airbag system. If the windows are up and the airbags go off the overpressure in the car would harm you and your passengers as well as blow out some windows. The vents prevent the interior overpressure.
They are also the outlets for the flow-through ventilation. With the air recirculation switch off (allowing outside air in), cabin air flows out these vents and out the body - likely behind the bumper covering.

is that a joke?
if it's not, that's right up there with the most ridiculous things i've ever heard from a car salesman. #1 being "this car doesn't need sparkplugs because it is turbocharged"

I was told that if you dis-member a body, and keep it in the boot for an extended period of time, it would help vent out the unpleasant oder. That was an option my dealer just threw in with the car. Nice guy.

Well Yucca, I embarassed to say that not only did I not know what they were, I never really even took the time to ask myself what they were. If fact, I barely even noticed them. Thanks for asking what, for me anyway, was a very good question.
Now I can stash bodies with impunity!!! Yea!!!!

They are HEPA filters for dog owners. But yours appear to be the
chihuahua filters. Your dealer screwed you by installing the wrong
filters. I suggest the Alta or K & N Saint Bernard/Irish Wolfhound
size HEPA filter. Call MINI Division for further help.

Yucca is on the road, on his way to a driving school in Florida. I'll ask him to post a pic of Lucas, his St. Bernard, in his MINI. Yucca usually keeps the back seats down for Lucas....he's NOT sitting in the boot! LOLOLOL!!!
The boot might be a bit cramped for a full grown St. Bernard. Anybody though of putting a person back there?
My teenaged niece rides regularly in the rear trunk area of an older Toyota RAV4. There are 4 or 5 sitting in the 4 seats and that leaves room for her in the rear to sit on the floor. He needs a minivan don't you think, but it won't fit in his garage (a custom built home but done when he owned a Mazda 323 and Toyota RAV4)
Anyway it looks like the flow through purpose of the foam and openings is working because everything is getting sucked that way from the car.
And those are not exhaust noise vents as the exhaust would be poisonous to have in the interior.

I was told to make sure you don't block those vents. It screws up the air movement inside the car, But I don't know what exactly happens if you do. I never noticed anything when I accidently blocked'em for a month.

I think there might be some sort of surprise hidden inside those vents.
Maybe the other 4 beers from the six-pack they used when making the exhaust tips?

Turns out that some pictures of Lucas the St. Bernard motoring in the MINI are available on the BAMA Club website.
