New key

Forgive me if this is a rehash. I did the search and couldn't find an answer. We just picked up a sweet 05 BRG ragtop. It came with only one key (the convenience one that opens everything including the top). Is the only option for a new key the dealership? I've found some keys on line but they don't clarify if they just manually unlock the door or if they are a full function key.

I can see this site is going to be well used. I've already found all kinds of useful tips.

I'm only familiar with the first generation of keys (the clamshell shaped ones- I believe by 2005 the keys were kind of flat) but I think they were similar in that the car shipped with two keys- one a button type key with remote functions (which you appear to have) and another without buttons, but that will unlock the drivers side door and will start the car, as it has the transponder in it. Your car may have also come with an emergency key that unlocks the door but will not start the car- this type of key is very small, not much bigger than the blade.

Your best bet is to order the non button key from a dealer. They will require proof of ownership and it will run between $50 and $75 or so. It will arrive in a few days cut and transpondered and ready to go. Any key you find on eBay will need cutting (good luck finding somebody who does that) and will also need to be programmed, if it even has the transponder thing in it. Save yourself the hassle and get the key through the dealer, IMHO.

Just my .02.

Val

The 05+ gen1 keys that came with the car were the flat type with a built in remote...2 came with the car, and one plastic non remote wallet key.
the earlier gen1 key does not work...the refresh gen1 mini's anti theft system was significantly changed...
the only real option is to order a new key from the dealer, and then have all keys present to be re-paired to the antithesft system.
It os possible to buy the right blanks/keys, and then have them cut, even pared to open the door, but you need the dealer add the key to the immobilizer....
so just swallow hard, and order the keys from the dealer...heck get 2 if the price is righr imo...

I got one from the dealer. The day I ordered it, I got home to find the plastic key along with the dealers paperwork. I tried it and was surprised to find it started the car. I figured the keys had a transponder or something and the plastic one was only to open the door. Anyway, picked up the spare today, they programmed it, and we're good to go. Expensive, but it beats walking.

The plastic key was refered to as the "wallet " key or emergency key...it is chipped, but i was cautioned to not overuse it since it will wear quickly. It can start the car, and unlock the door.
Good to hear it worked out!!

Cool! I didn't know it was chipped. I thought "that's a little odd that this piece of easily reproduced plastic can start my car!"
