Hi all... I recently saw someone here who installed 6 1/2" polk speakers in the doors of his MINI. They are an exact fit for the OEM ones. I noticed in the photos that there were screws visible from the outside (around the speaker grill) so I figure "Maybe it's possible to install new speakers WITHOUT having to remove the entire door panel and access them from behind?"

Can I simply pry off the harmon kardon speaker grills (How exactly are the MINI speaker grills attached? clips that pry out and off?) and then unscrew the OEM speakers, detach the wires, attach the wires to the new Polk speakers, and secure them in place, put the grill on top, and secure that in place -- all WITHOUT having to remove the entire door panel?

Anyone have any installation experience here, much appreciated.

Thanks,

-MB

You'll have to take the whole panel off I believe. And the oem speakers are not 6.5" but you can fit 6.5" speakers but you need a custom mount for them so they will fit.

In order to remove the OEM speakers properly, the door panel has to be remove first. While 6.5" will fit, but there are a few things to keep in mind when selecting replacement speakers. The rear intrusion of the speaker magnet can obstruct the window from rolling all the way. Using a speaker mount will allow more installation depth, while possibly create a problem when refitting the door panel as the speaker is now protruding outward more than the factory speaker.
