Taking apart 2011 MCS auto gear selector ****

Thought I'd share this in case it helps someone out there. I wanted to change the gear selector **** on my 2011 automatic but when I pulled off the handle, the 2011's pushbutton's stem was much longer than any I saw on any replacement handles. To get the new ****'s pushbutton to be fully functional I decided to see if I could swap the EOM's stem onto the new handle. Here's the steps I used to take the MCS's handle apart. I was faking my way through it and didn't take pictures, but hopefully the descriptions are good enough.

Remove OEM selector handle by pulling up firmly. I find it's easiest to place a board across the front seats and use a protected pry bar.

Remove the handle's chrome "helmet visor" by prying gently at the top center of the visor, prying straight out and away from the handle.

When the visor is removed, there's a metal tongue behind it that will fall out. If it didn't fall out, pull it out.

For the next step there might be a better way to get the "guts" out of the selector to remove the stem, but I was stumped and since I'm not going to use the handle again I went for it:

If you push the stem in and out of the handle and watch how the mechanism works, you can see where the button mechanism pivots around a metal pin that goes through the sides of the handle - use a nail or similar to poke out that pin. When you do that, the piece that holds the stem in place is free inside the handle. I shook that piece to the opening in the front lower half of the handle and used a screwdriver to pop that piece out of the handle. It looked like it wouldn't fit through the opening, but it popped out without any trouble or damage. When that piece was removed, the stem fell right out.

I swapped my MCS stem onto a BMW X3 handle and so far I've had no problems with my new frankenshifter. YMMV.

I think my shifter is not put back correctly, if you put the metal tongue back, did it reach the rod inside the shifter?

when i put the shifter back without the helmet and tongue, I can insert a key and push the rod back into the hole and the shifter can lock, however, when I put the tongue and helmet back, click the helmet and the rod will be pulled and it wont get back down.

I am thinking if the tongue should be using as a lever fuction to force the rod back after the helmet is clicked..

please advise or take some picture of the parts if you still have....thanks,

The part that moves the rod is the metal pin that's on the back of the button assembly pointing up on the piece in the upper right in this picture:

(This picture doesn't show the button assembly removed from that piece, but hopefully you see what I mean with yours?)

When you pop the helmet shield back in, you have to make sure that pin goes through the loop on the top of the rod.

If you put it all together before putting it in the car and you push the face shield, does the rod go up? It's hard to see but if you have the bottom of the rod on a table and push the button you can feel the assembly go down if it's working correctly. I hope this helps!
