Interior/Exterior Painted Rally Light Covers - UK / US Flags (work in progress)
Painted Rally Light Covers - UK / US Flags (work in progress)
I got the factory installed rally lights, and they game me covers (by law). The issue was the official covers are BRIGHT WHITE PLASTIC!!
I planned a little project.
The project is broken down into a left over, that I will go into detail on how I made, and the right one (different paint job, but same basic idea).
In order to pull this off right, you need to do a little preplanning. The covers are white, and I do not want to have to paint the white, so I am going to plan this in a way that protects it.
First step, is to plan and tape off all the white!

Next thing I need to do is remove the cross bars for the main red stripe.

Now that I have the WHITE tapped off, I need to now tape off the parts that will be blue.

Time to paint. Now I use this paint for this project.

First paint

Don't panic, if it looks like crap in the pic, it is still wet, and the tape is under it.
Let this dry...
Now we need to remove the tape we used to mask off the BLUE areas

Now we need to mask off the newly painted RED areas. MAKE SURE IT IS DRY FOLKS!!!

Get to painting!!! BLUE!

Let this dry, and get to peeling...

We are almost done with the Union Jack. We need to let this dry for a few days (5 or so) and then put 2 or 3 coats of clear....
Now here is the same steps with the US Side (it is not done, but I want to show you where I am, I just need to dab on stars). Also, you will notice that the line is not as clean where the red and blue meet. I used a small brush to clean that up, will post a pic later. I also used the back of a blade to clean up some of the edges...
Once I get them clear coated, I will post a pic of them on the car.

For the stars, I am taking a little of a risk. I am using the foil stars you got on your vocabulary homework in 3rd grade. Why foil, well it is thin, but still metal, and I will seal it under the clear coat.

I used this paint here to make them white.

Finished look...

Here is what they look like on the car...

Thoughts???

The paint i am using is formulated for plastic. If I recall, the solvent in the paint "melts" the surface of the plastic and bonds to it as it cures. High temp paint would sit on the surface of these plastic covers, so while I do not know, I suspect would not offer additional protection. Also, high temp paint is hard to find in bright red and blue.
Just a thought, but the bumper is in the same area, plastic, and not painted with high temp paint
