2009 R56 w/ Nav -- please insert navigation dvd

Recently, my 2009 R56 started asking me on occasion to insert the navigation DVD. I'll eject the disc, push it back in, and usually it loads just fine after that. I also only notice this when starting the car —*it doesn't just randomly stop recognizing the disc when I'm driving along. The surface of the disc looks rather good, too, so I don't think it's a problem with the disc itself.

I'm wondering if this might be something simple (like a lens that needs cleaning) or an indication of more serious issue with the dvd drive. And if it is something like a dirty lens… how would one go about cleaning it without any real user controls for the drive? Has anyone else run into this issue before? And how did you get it resolved?

Reviving an old question:

I haven't had this issue except a couple times. Not sure why it happened. I am currently getting the issue of the dvd not ejecting at all. Has this happened to you? I think a drive that won't eject reliably is something worth replacing.

Interested to hear if anyone's been able to get the DVD to come out when it's been stuck.

I had forgotten to take the nav DVD out of the old drive when I replaced it. I couldn't see any way to eject it manually (no paperclip hole, for example), but the guys in the BMW parts department (where I had to return the old drive for the core charges) was able to get the disk out of there undamaged. I didn't want to man-handle it too much myself before getting credit for the core return first, so I let them do it.

Hi fishbert and any others, when you have this work done, did you see any improvement with the new core or new DVD unit? At least faster response times, maybe?

I wouldn't really expect that sort of thing.
