Vibration problems when I brake at high speed
Vibration problems when I brake at high speed
Hi guys, here's my problem, one day I changed my wheels and didn't torque with a torque wrench my wheel bolts, pure negligence from my part,I should know better.
I went on the road and when I was on the highway I felt a big vibration coming from my wheels so when I checked, almost all my wheel bolts came loose. I retighten them properly this time but now the damage is done, when I brake from high speed,I feel a big vibration on my steering wheel. I think I warped the rotors and thinking replacing them,I'm getting close from a brake job anyway, would that be accurate to think that my front rotors got stressed and warped,I don't see anything else, would that be a fair diagnostic, thanks
Michel

a shot in the dark - but cheap...
would it make sense to rotate front to rear and see if that changes anything?
if the symptoms are unaffected, that would rule out a few possible causes:
1. you were really unlucky and the re-torque left a wheel not quite squared up and concentric (a long shot i admit)
2. the previous issue left a wheel with some severe wear in the seating area for the bolts, resulting in a very slight misalignment
if the rotors were distorted i'd expect some symptoms at lower speed too - perhaps more difficult to detect, but still present
just 2 cents,
Charlie

Rotors warped,
Try applying light brake on a down huill and see if you can feel the pulsation that occurs at higher speeds/more intense vibration.
Or you can do it the real way, buy a run out gauge and check the runout of the rotors.
A shop and do the latter as well.

Probably to do a run out on my discs is a very good idea,I will borrow a gauge and do it on the week end.
I rotate my wheel front to back every years because I use winter tires on different rims, maybe I should check the holes for abnormal elongation as well since they are magnesium or aluminiun but It happens with my winter rims as well so it can't be the rims because it would do it only on my summers.
I will investigate more,thanks guys
