Sure, you love her/him... but maybe they don't understand what this car means to you... so you save the argument and buy the thing ya gotta have on the sly... Or maybe you can't explain the advantages of the pulley so well... so you just say it increases fuel economy.

My confession: I've bought money orders with cash to buy items for my MCS so that she-who-must-not-be-denied doesn't know how much I spent. When she asked how much the Whalen shift **** cost, I told her it was just lunch money, I didn't even have to charge or write a check for it.

There now, I feel so much better.

God speed.

I lied like a rug when ordering the car. It wasn't worth arguing about. Upon delivery all was devuldged. Yes I did get the better stereo, headlights and A/C, but look at this cool hat the salesman gave me, uh I mean you.

My wife wouldn't understand the pulley, so hopefully I will never have to explain it. Yes honey the engine would have been under warranty, but .......

CooperBeagle,

Good point and I'm sure it does happen.
When I got in from Fed Ex, a box measuring 2'x3'x1' my wife asked what THAT was.
It was my Quicksilver Cat-back exhaust so I told her it was a "muffler". "Car part" is also another good answer.
A non descript but technically correct answer. It's kinda hard to hide the spare parts that are piling up in the garage in plain view. Maybe I can just refer to them as raw materials for an "art project".

...do you mean begging for forgiveness versus asking for permission?

I tell what is happening because I do not like couches or she-stuff that shows up unexpectedly...hence, we have a unilateral agreement to discuss all large purchases.

Some of the comments I've read in threads give credence to the statistic that the use and attitude of $$ is one the largest single cause of marital issues...

For us, we have a predetermined budget that allocates a certain amount for personal spending. Hence, we'll just try to spend within the limit. However, there's an "automobile" category under expenditure as well, which means extra $ for MINI.

I haven't secrety purchased any parts, but I have snuck out and given the MINI a quick wash when I was supposed to be doing other chores. "I'm just going to take the dog out for a minute" usually gets me out the door; the bucket and wash mitt are stashed in the garage. Another reason to love dogs!

I think we all need some marriage counseling

This is a great post. I am so guilty of this. I have the items shipped at work and then sneak them into the garage and then install the stuff later. I haven't had an exhaust shipped yet, but pretty much everything else has been.

it's easier to get forgiveness than permission.

the only thing I lied to her about was how fast the car can go and how fast I've taken it. (she thinks I've taken it to 133kph and average 70kph driving) as the asian mini's are in kph.

she doesn't ask and I don't volunteer.. much, e.g. I'm getting my ECU upgraded and an Alta Oil Catch Can at Randy's Va Pulley Party. She asked what I was doing and I told her that a guy is fixing my software and installing a can to catch dirty oil. She said that sounds reasonable... now what am I going to say about the M7 Nitrous System I want next???

I sell stuff on E-bay to pay for my MINI addiction. I have a Pay-Pal account and she knows I buy stuff. I just don't tell her what it costs, and she doesn't ask. So I guess I don't lie. I don't know what I'd tell her if she ever asked what the Whalen shift **** cost. I've had it for about 3 months now and she hasn't even noticed it.

Nope. When I tell all the other stuff that is available that I'd like, and what it would cost, but an intake or a pulley is all I can justify right now, she's pretty cool with that.

It's hard to justify to most women why you need a better part to replace one that works fine...no use trying to explain it to her and I have been guilty of the money order cover up myself a few times. Sometimes I get caught and sometimes I don't and it just depends on what time of the month(both the day and her cycle...lol) it is on how upset she gets and the severity of my punishment. She's told me I am a compulsive shopper a few times but I really don't think so at all because I plan way in advance and research almost everything I buy and I never buy the cheap stuff, she on the other hand would always purchase the least exspensive availible item regardless of the quality so of course in my mind I'm right but I know in reality we have to meet somewhere in the middle, however it is ushually hard for me to compromise on most things due to my German heritage I believe...

Never actually lied - but I am fierce that I have a 'hobby' budget of $2000/year. (Canafian funds - not real money!! )

Whatever I do within this budget is my business.
BTW - My wife has the same allowance - usually spends it on gardening supplies & decorations.

Each to his/her own.

My problem is that she is jealous of the attention (quite obssessive, you know) that I pay to the little beauty.

I have had stuff drop-shiped to scottG's house for install? she spends countless $$$ on stuff for "The Home" which I dont say a word about, lamps, fans, just general crap to me, but gold to her, well mini stuff to her is like that, so this way she thinks she is getting the best of me, and that is how I have survived 21 years of marrage, honesty ... she know deep down its going on, maybe thats how she ...
hay wait a min.... maybe im the one being played... thats ok too... i can live with that... more mini stuff... yep yep.
