Upgrading air filter on 95 SPI mini
Upgrading air filter on 95 SPI mini
Hi,
I have a 95 mini which is SPI. I'm thinking of upgrading the air filter to either a K&N replacement of the stock air filter, or replacing the assembly with something like this:

Anyone have any experience with the options? How do they perform and sound?
Thanks,
Trevor.

the dearth of information about grey market Minis continues . . .
One thing I wonder: when you take a corb's Mini and pull the stock air filter and go to a K&N cone you need to change the needle in order to change the running fuel/air mix due to the increased air supply.
How's that work in an S/Mpi ? ?
Just wondering . . . in today's MINI the computer takes care of it (supposedly). Is the early ECU that smart?

trev .... have you considered investing in an exhaust rather than an intake. If you want SOUND, go for a PlayMini, Fletcher or something like that and you'll get some nice sound. LCB and a twin DTM makes for sweet sounds.

You'll "probably" be alright adding the K&N cone intake. Theoretically when you add anything that allows more air to go in or out (Intake & Exhaust) you need to add more fuel as well to achieve a stoichiometric mixture.
I do not have any knowedge of how much, if any the SPI ECU/Computer can compensate if there is a lean condition so the best thing to do would join a UK based forum and see what they do over there, such as theminiforum.
You may also want to look into switching to a carburetor because I believe that is what many people end up doing when modding the newer minis with fuel injection. That way you can adjust the fuel mixture yourself rather than having to buy a new ECU or ship your ECU to the UK to be chipped ect depending on the standard process for SPI minis.
I just took a look at one of the UK based vendors I purchase from and their stage 1 kit (K&N intake, LCB, cat back exhaust, & uprated spark plugs) makes no mention of recommending dyno time (rolling road) to adjust emissions, timing, & fueling. However they do make the statement for their stage 3 kit which is more aggressive.
So it seems like you will be alright adding the filter, but you should verify before you install/purchase.

you can go with a carb on a newer motor. a buddy of mine has a '99 A series with a weber on it. the thing you may need to look at is the ignition. the mpi motors don't have a inlet for a dizzy. you will need to retain the coil pack and maybe add a trigger wheel on the crank and run a stand alone ignition system (like megajolt) or mod you existing ecu to make it work but this also allows a much greater control of your ignition curve and you'd be able to fine tune it through out the whole rev range.
