First Snow Drive
First Snow Drive
I've never driven in snow before, but I did put Falken Espia EPZs on the Cooper a few months ago in case I encountered some this year. We generally get very little snow on Vancouver Island but every once in awhile, we get a good dump.
I'm staying out of town right now at a higher elevation out of city limits, so there is a lot of hill climbing in my commute, and the University is situated on the side of a steep hill. I was a bit apprehensive but figured I spent the money on Snow rubber, I'd better get to use it at least once before I swap it out!
The drive in was not bad as the snow was just starting to stick. However, after 2 hours the Campus decided to close because of the 8"+ on the ground. As I made my way back, I maneuvered around plenty of stuck cars with All Seasons and/or bad drivers. I just kept it in 1st and 2nd gear, took my time, and it was a breeze even in deeper snow on unmolested roads. I got a few smiles and surprised looks from guys in big lifted trucks as I made my way through the back roads. Overall I'd say these tires perform very well. They suck in the dry, but in the really nasty stuff - deep snow, ice, slush, they really grip nicely and feel very planted. On the last steep climb to the house the snow was so deep it was just spraying up my grill onto the windscreen but I was easily able to hold a clean path.
I took a picture of my car a the "summit" of my commute.
