annoying aux buzz from cigarette powered device
Hi all
Thanks to my new commute, i've been listening to some books on tape. Kinda nice, actually.
I've got a cigarette to usb adapter powering an old ipod and i'm using a short 1/8 male to male cable to send the signal to aux. No fancy ipod interface necessary for me.
problem is, when i'm powering the ipod, i get a buzz. When i remove power completely, i get a slightly different buzz. When i allow ground but remove power (pull the cigarette adapter out slightly so positive is disconnected but ground stays connected), it works great.
any suggestions? I've tried two different chargers, my next step will be to trade out the ipod power cable, but i'm not counting on that having an effect.
thanks

Are you saying that you still get a buzz when the iPod is connected only to the aux cable and running off its battery?
For the buzz while connected to power, it could be a ground loop problem. You could try a ground loop isolator: http://www.amazon.com/Peripheral-PGL...=pd_sbs_misc_2

Yes, pod running off battery, only connected to aux = buzz
best case for no buzz is the ipod's ground connected, no power.
just for fun, I removed the ipod completely but leave the charger, charger cable and aux cable plugged in to test those components and cables = no buzz.
going to try a new ipod cable now.

If your iPod sounds fine when using headphones, it probably isn't the iPod. Try unplugging and reinserting the aux connector at the back of the radio. My guess is a poor ground connection between the radio and the iPod.
