Two Newbie questions on MPG

Hello Fellow MINI Enthusiasts!

I've had the pleasure of owning my 2009 MCS Convertible (named Sarah Jane) for just about three months now and I wasn't sure it would be as much fun as the 2002 Mustang GT I traded for her, but I've been quite happily surprised! True, she won't get up and go like my pony did, but she does corner extremely well and she definitely has a preference for being topless! I do have a couple of questions for everyone, which I did try to answer by searching the forums, but I guess I haven't gotten the query phrased quite right since I haven't found anything yet. So here they are:

1. Does anyone have any information on top up vs top down gas mileage?

2. How adversely does "Sport Mode" affect overall MPG?

I do love sport mode, I've been using it on Friday afternoons when I attempt to find new twisty, curvey routes to supplement my 45 mile drive home. I originally thought that sport mode was just a placebo, but after a couple of sessions I quickly discovered how wrong I was! Sport mode really does make SJ strut! It's also pretty cool when you hit the button and feel the seats start firming up, sort of like strapping in the seat of a F14 and hearing the canopy shut!

I'll look forward to hearing back for all of you knowledgable folks!

Mat,

If you have an automatic, the Sport mode may directly impact gas mileage (downward) due to changes in shift points. Otherwise, the only impact it would have is indirect due to a proclivity to want to play a little harder.

1. I try to never drive with the top up so I don't know, but I do get about 30mpg around town and 32 on the open road.

2. Who really cares. The MINI is just too much fun for me to care.

BTW - don't park too close to me. Except for the stripes ours look like twins

I recently took a 2 hour trip on the interstate with the top down and noticed no difference from when I've driven the same route with the top up. The dealer told me sport mode should not affect mpg although I use it all the time--I think it makes the car respond better.
