Oil Filter question

We have a 05 MCS Convert. Took it to Tires Plus, and am normally satisified with them, but they couldn't get the canister off the engine. They didn't want to torque too hard on it so as to crack it. They are going to get another one first. Anyone else have this issue? Do they break? How are these attached? A long bolt, or just the nut being integral to the canister, screwing into the block. Any info helpful.

Thanks,
Perry

And if you want the short answer, the "nut" is cast into th canister iteself and is difficult to break. The canister doesn't need a gorilla's torque on it since the o-ring does the sealing. Also, "break" the seal by unscrewing the housing, then LET IT SIT 5 MINUTES. This drains the oil from the canister, making for a mess-free change. You reminded me... I have to change my oil...

I haven't broken one yet. It takes a 36mm socket to get it off. We find them way over tightened from quick lube places all the time. I alot of times have to put a cheater bar on the ratchet to get them loose. Do that to get it off and replace it, then tighten it to 25 NM torque.

Thanks for the quick responses. Good to know they are hard to break. I'll also pass on the torque spec, so they don't overtighten.

Thanks,
Perry
