TPS, technical questions

OK, I now have some 17 x 7 inch OEM wheels to put some decent 215's on my 2009. Conventional of course as I am in the camp that believes tires are half the suspension, and the car should not let tires go airborne over bumps in corners. At least not street cars. Race cars, or my old Morgan, OK; not a 2009 production car.

The run flats TPS system is set for 33 Lbs. With conventional tires, this is possibly higher than I would want in the rear. I would like to be able to have the TPS set where I want it based on the tire, vehicle loading, suspension settings, and my handling preferences. In other words, correctly.

So, is the sensor proprietary to the MINI only?

Is it a binary sensor and the ECU just says Yup, it's low, or is it an analog sensor and the ECU decides the set point?

Can I buy sensors with different set points? Say from other BMW's or some generic house. I plan on keeping my old wheels and tires in tact, ( one as a spare tire in the car), so I don't want to dismount them to get the sensors.

Inflate the tires where you want (according to specs) and reset the tpms when you are ready. Should save your pressure(s) once reset is complete.

That would be great. HOW does one "reset and save". I know VW has a feature to save, but I can find nothing in the MINI documentation other than the fixed 33 Lbs.

Follow the instructions in the manual. You basically press the left stalk end button to get to all of your settings. One of them is the TPMS reset. There is no fixed 33lb setting - not sure where you found that.

Just re-read the book. My info was from the dealer. Clueless I guess.
Now I have to figure out if I need to file a flat boss on the s-lites I bought to mount sensors, or if they will mount OK. Don't know until I bust a tire off them.

tvrgeek, you are in bowie, right? bring one of those s-lites down to my shop and I'll test fit a sensor in one of them.

I'm with Admiral Tire on 301 a mile south of walmart in bowie.

Supper. I grab one when I get home Monday and roll on down.
We can talk tires. Thinking 960's but am open to suggestions.
