R50/53 Window motor replacement - special tool?
Window motor replacement - special tool?
The window motor on the driver's side door of my 2004 MCS (88K) has failed twice in a month, so I guess its time to repair/replace. The following site discusses removal - http://www.z50ak1.com/mini/default.htm - but I have a question. He mentions that the BMW special tool (51-3-240) used to remove the 'nylon clamp washer' that holds the glass to the regulator is not necessary, and that an allen wrench, 5 mm or 3/16" in size, will suffice. Out of curiosity I contacted a German automotive tool supplier www.samstagsales.com regarding the tool, and they claim it costs $75!!! I may be naive, but can BMW really charge that much for a tool that is apparently nothing more than a standard allen wrench? Is it true that it will work? TIA.
When you need to adjust the window when it is all the way up the tool is the way to go. But when the window is down a little you can get in with a wrench. But in a pinch you can use a real long flatblade screwdriver and a hammer to turn the wheels to loosen/tighten the adjustment wheels. Good luck.
