Price of oil filter at dealer increased?!?

I just picked up another OEM oil filter from my local dealer and it was $15!!! The same filter probably 6 months ago was $8 something. I asked them if the price went up and they said yes they are increased everyonce in a while. WTF? I bought it but will not be buying them from my dealer again.

Has anybody else experienced a large price increase on the filters?

I think that's retail. I noticed the dealers have way different prices and even retail. I needed a lower motor mount and online it was $41.73 retail so I called a dealer and was quoted $76! I mentioned that was really pricey then he asked if I saw it cheaper. I said $40 and he quoted me $41.73 Coincidence? I don't think so.

I called 3 different dealers for an upper mount and was quoted from $33 to $45 to $85.

Moral of my story is to shop around for each part.

Get a filter from NAPA, the gold series, made by wix--it's not only a better filter, it's cheaper too.

The o-ring on the NAPA filter is not sized correctly and it leaked for me. Put a new OEM one and it did not leak... so the NAPA ones are not that great IMHO

Did you get a gold series? I have never had one leak, maybe the ring didn't seat properly. I did have a problem with an OEM filter though, go figure...

Wix filters are built a bit better; the plastic cap on the end prevents the filter from collpasing-it's a better design than the OEM filter.

Yes, the gold series is what I tried. I may have to try them again next time, but there is an obvious difference in thickness of the OEM o-ring vs the NAPA.

I just recently replaced the oil filter on my 06 R53 JCW with the Wix filter I purchased locally in SLC. No leaks. I have been using the Wix brand in all my vehicles for several years now with no issues.

Out of curiosity, I bought a WIX 57303 and a NAPA Gold 7303; they are the same. I compared them to the OEM filter and the O-ring has exactly the same thickness and circumference as OEM. No leak so far.

Either you got the wrong O-ring (somehow) or it wasn't seated correctly. I noticed the paper boxes they come in are not sealed and this could easily get mixed up. I always do a visual before paying.

The plastic caps at the ends of the WIX filter are stiffer (better structurally) but I'm not sure that translates to better filtering. The WIX also has more pleats (81 vs 71 OEM) but again the filtering media is what counts. Has anyone done a test?

My understanding is that yes, they are the same filter. Just a different number for NAPA.

Yes, Wix makes filters for both CARQUEST and NAPA. The CARQUEST blue, the NAPA gold and the WIX yellow are all the exact same filters. They specialize in fleet filters and are made extremely well.

Hey fellas,

How did the question mark (?) get into my post in quotation? I wasn't asking if they (WIX and NAPA filters) are the same. I know they are.
