Looking for lodging info Washington DC area

The wife and I are planning a trip to Willimasburg and the DC area for October of this year.

Having never actually been to DC, I'm looking for info on where to stay while in the area.

I've been shopping the internet looking at hotels in and around DC and have a few questions.

Should we stay outside of DC and drive in to visit, or suck it up and pay the high prices and stay in DC?

I've looked at the Kellogg Conference Center at Galludet Unviersity. Anyone familiar with staying there?

Being a northern VA resident, most will tell you to stay outside of DC. Eg maryland, or VA. Im partial to VA

Look up the DC metro map and follow the metro lines out. Find an area that a hotel is w/in walking/ short driving distance to metro. much easier.
Traffic in the DC area is HORRENDOUS! and will make your visit very painfull, especially if you are trying to see the sites.

Id suggest fairfax county. Except the HUNTINGTON metro stop. Do not stay in that area.

Trip to DC

First up- I live in Northern Virginia so am parital to the area. I recommend you consider the Embassy Suites Hotel in Alexandria. It is right across the street from the King Street Metro which can give you full access to DC, etc. Also, Old Town Alexandria is only about 1.5 miles from the Hotel... it is also an interesting place to visit. Plus, you can buy a Metro Pass which will make the visit efficent as well as effective.

Having just traveled to DC to visit friends, I would highly suggest staying outside the city to avoid traffic. The Metro is great for tourists.
Make sure you stop by Ben's Chili Bowl on U street for a killer chili dog (half-smoke).
I'd find a B&B outside the ring somewhere and near a park-n-ride for the metro.
