My rear seat delete

Just figured I'd share some pics. Not my typical all the way through the process pics but really this "mod" is pretty easy to do if you have some simple handyman mechanics skills. All you need is a jigsaw, drill, and sandpaper. A file helps too.

I bought one 2'x4' piece of nearly 1/2" thick MDF (I say nearly because Home Depot listed it as something like .4865" ) that was $6.50

I bought some nuts, bolts, and washers and the ring pins at my local hardware store, totaling around $11.00

Then I got the carpet glue for $4 for a quart and a putty knife to spread it $1

At this point all you need is the carpet. I decided to get it at a local store so I could get a nice automotive carpet that was as close a match as possible. I also got some carpet pile to back to top of the board with and give it a little more cushion. This portion was the most expensive part at $42. Had I just gone with a piece to cover the top from Kragen/Checker/O'Rielly it would have only been $10. But like I said, that would have only covered the top portion, would have been far too dark, and I wanted it to look more professional.

So total spent was ~ $64...and regularly costs $170

Now for weight savings: 05 Mini Cooper S
Seat bottom - 9.95lbs
Seat backs - 29.55lbs
Seat back brack, and seat belt buckle - 2.00lbs

Total ~ 42lbs (seat belts themselves still in)

My board BEFORE carpet but with hardware was 13lbs...carpet isn't heavy, but glue IS! And I used too much I'd say it probably weighs 18lbs now...I'll weigh it soon to find out. Also, you could easily use some 3/8" thick plywood and not bother with the supports that I made and probably come in under 10lbs if you wanted. Like I said, I just wanted it to look somewhat professional, I also wanted it to be able to support a lot of weight. I've been kneeling on it and it doesn't even flinch (though I'm only 140lbs )

Thus a very easy way to save 25lbs. I also stopped carrying around the stock jack which is another 4.45lbs, so that makes it 30lbs. Once I remove the seat blets I'll weigh them, expect them to be ~ 4lbs each.

Now for a couple pics

Looks good dude. Looks nice with the carpet vs the one they sell. My seat delete cost me about 40 bux and does not have place to store things like yours does.

Looks good. I'm in the process of making my own right now too. But mine is in a totally different direction. I'll way it when I'm done to see how we compare.

Nice job. For those without as much skill, my dad just put in the Wyvern Motorsports rear-seat delete kit with similar looking results.

The contrast in the color of the carpet is made more dramatic because of the flash. It is much less of a difference in person and natural light.

Thanks,

Chris...I decided to mount it that way in an attempt to make it fast and easy to remove. I say attempt. It took me a good 20 minutes to install the damn thing as the bolts in the back weren't quite long enough after adding the carpet to get the wing nuts started. And the pins up front are also very tight and needed a hammer . I could always go get longer bolts for the back and thinner pins up front and make it quick and easy. But I kinda like how flush it is right now.

COOUUPER S...I was hoping to be under $40...and thought I was going to be well under until I found out how much they were charging for carpet! Crazy people.

Notfunky...do post up in here, I we can have the title changed to "The Rear Seat Delete Thread" or something to that accord. Or just post a link up for your own, I'd like to check it out

Oh...BTW, has anybody looked into adding some kind of triangulation brace bolting into the holes for the rear seat back bracket? Especially a great place for a roll bar to triangulate into (looks like it anyway).

Davis...that one looks great too
