I've had the Magnaflow on my MCS for about 4 months now, and I've just busted my 2nd resonator in that time. First one happened about 2 weeks after the install, so I just figured a got a bad part. But now the exact same thing has happened.

I first noticed a slight rattle coming from the exhaust at startup and during idle and low rev driving (around 1000-1500 rpm) but after driving around for 5 minutes and warming things up, the rattle went away. Then it started to happen over a larger range in rpm, but still went away when it got hot. I put the car up at my buddy's shop and banged the resonator and got a bunch of clanging in return. Took the car back to the distributor and they found that the thru-pipe on the resonator inlet side had come loose and was shaking around inside. The resonator was replaced on the spot at no charge. After a track day a couple weeks ago, I started the car up to leave for home and heard the rattle again, and it's gotten worse since...same sequence of events. The rep at the distributor where I had it fixed the first time mentioned that there have been a few MCS systems with the same problem and he was going to investigate further.

Has anyone else had the same problem?

I have had the exact same problem. I thought something was loose and I took it back to my installer to make sure I wouldn't drop the system on the Interstate and send it through someones windscreen at 80mph. They said the resonater was farked, so I contacted the place I bought it from and got a new resonater. I haven't had the time to get it installed yet though.

Same problem with my Borla "sport" resonator. First one melted after a bout a week of use. Second one did not even lasted that long. One 1/2 hr session on the track and I've got "marbles" at start up again. This time I'm just going to pull it off and run a straight pipe in it's place.

I had the exact same issue with my forward resonator two months ago. They indicated at the time that there "could be" a batch of bad welds out there. Magnaflow replaced it quickly. I'm starting to get another rattle...I'm hoping it's not the same thing again.

It would have to be a batch problem. I haven't sold a Magnaflow in a few months because of the new systems coming out, and my advice for customers to wait and see, but I have had a Magnaflow on my car.

I had the unit on my car for about 9000 miles, most of which are at the track. I have not had any problems with the resonator. My entire system is blue from heat, so I'd guess that if there was a problem, I would have seen it.

I'd be interested to hear from my customers if they have had any problems (I haven't heard from any on this issue).

Randy

Welker (MBlotto I presume?), I think I've got the same thing going on. When my car is cold it makes quite a bit of noise and rattling. When it's hot it's all gone. I'm going to be taking a closer look when I get some time in the next few weeks.

I'll keep you posted.

Just to clear things up a bit, I'm not out to cause controversy about Magnaflow and the quality of their parts. I absolutley LOVE the exhaust system and the added HP and the music to my ears that comes from those twin trumpets in the back. I started this thread to be sure that I wasn't doing something wrong to mess with the integrity of the resonator. But honestly, what could one do wrong to damage an exhaust anyway?

After just now speaking with the Magnaflow distributor, it turns out that the company are going to make some changes to the resonator in hopes that this doesn't happen anymore, because it has been occurring on more than a few systems. Keep in mind this is all info that I heard from the rep, but I would assume he's on the up and up. The centre pipe in the resonator is welded at the factory, but is designed to come apart to allow for expansion/contraction of the resonator when it gets hot. In some cases, the centre pipe has fallen out of alignment and ends up rattling against the resonator housing, hence the noise at startup and low idle. As the centre pipe heats up, it expands and pushes up against the resonator housing and the rattling goes away, but some have come so far out of line that the heat is not enough to stop the rattle.

Obviously there's no negative impact on performance, but I didn't spend almost a thousand bucks (Canadian) to have a rattling exhaust system. Apparently the slightly modded resonators are now shippng and I should have my third one installed by the middle of next week. I'll let you all know what the changes were. Here's hoping it works!

Paul, you caught me. mblotto it is. Let me know what comes of your investigation.
Mike

Mark,

If you do the straight thru pipe let us know how it affects the sound of the exhuast.

Thanks!
