Electrical to say the least
Electrical to say the least
2002 Mini bone stock with sunroof. So not sure if I posted this on this forum when the problem first occured but none the less i have not had a solution come up. Here is whats wrong.
1. No AC/Heater display will not turn on
2. Turn Signal indicator out (turn signals work)
3. Dash lights either stay on always or wont turn on always the opposite of what i want.
4. radio occasionally says disabled on the small display
5. sunroof and windows will not roll down occasionally
6. high beam indicator out
7. doors lock then unlock when i try to lock from the outside
All these are intermitent some more than others. Every once in a while everything will work when i start the car then as i drive systems start failing. So im pretty sure BCM is ok. I have pulled the car apart twice and I cant find a short or water damage (this all started after a huge storm). There are so many wires though I'm not sure where to start. currently the front seat and dash are the only things in the car.
Where should i start looking again? I have checked fuses and replaced the battery. I need this fixed I have no defroster and its below 20... which means no heater and driving with the sunroof cracked to defrost. Needless to say freezing!

Go to the BC1, make sure the connections are properly in and tight.
Check the fuses make sure several didn't blow.
Check the ECU ground (engine bay drivers side bolt into the Chasis next to the motor mount)
After that I'm afraid it's something more serious that'll likely take dealer help, and I'm suspecting you've done at least two of the three things I listed
GT1 is a full ECU control, an OBD scanner is just going to pull codes.

gotcha been searchin round bout the GT1 looks good but $$$$ no one else I know has a mini or a BMW to get a GT1, at least no one that would use it! I actually have gone through that list serveral times, but thanks. Yall know if the OBDII will through any codes on a faulty harness?
It is possible, but under the OBD II "rules" I think the oem computers are only required to give you P codes (for engine and emissions faults) and not electrical component specific problems. Also the GT1 will pinpoint the location of the problem. Besides a dealer, some outside shops have this equipment. Where are you located?
I am in Sacramento, California. The only place I know of that does Mini work out here is the dealer. I know a few people that own independent shops and no one has a GT1

There is a decent size MINI shop down in Dublin (where it should be a bit warmer too
) The Name eludes me at the moment but it might be worth looking into. Also someone from REME might now of an independent shop that can help you out.

Little progress today. Replaced a brake light on the passenger side. I guess I had running light but no brake light on that side. Things started working more intermittently but still screwy. Took the positive off the battery for a few hours and hooked it back up. HEATER WORKS and so do the dash lights and blinkers.
So problems that still exists:
-Radio controls on the back of the steering wheel dont work
-Stupid dinging noise when I open the door (like I left my lights on but they arent)
-Doors will lock then unlock when I press the lock key from outside the car.
Hopefully the heater and lights continue to work.....??

Did you leave the key in the ignition or close to it when you opened the door (causing the dinging noise?)
The other issues are very unusual
My next step would be to cough up the $75 diagnostic fee to just have them scan your car, and see what the computer says.

Ya I took the key out! So after about 3 weeks of tearing it apart I think I found it. The wiring for the cd changer (which is not installed = bare connector) was underneath the floor paneling by the tool kit. It was soaked with condensation. I took it out cleaned it and put it in a dry home in the boot. Everything works like a charm.... Freakin wiring
This is a good post. I have been having the same intermittent problems with my dash lights, flashers, door buzzer, etc. as lilbrown45 on my 2002 Mini Cooper with 60,000 miles. It all started happening after we drove it on rough icy roads. I checked all the fuses and relays, no problems there. I will check the brake bulbs next and then make my way to the ECU to make sure it's grounded well. I tried using several different OBDII scanners and they didn't help. They indicated that everything was fine even when the dash lights were out
Does anyone have any other ideas? I agree...freakin wiring. Thanks.

Replaced Brake Light Bulb
Okay, I found that the rear passenger side brake light bulb was ready to burn out so I replaced it. I think that may have corrected my electrical problems mentioned before. I'll let you know if that did the trick but everything seemed to work fine with my test drive. If that's it, thanks for tips in this particular thread. I hope it's that easy!
