TORX screwdrivers

About 5 months ago I had to buy a T-18 Torx screwdriver to install something on my Cooper and paid $14 for just the single driver. These fasteners are used on a lot of modern cars, and seem to be used everywhere on the MINI. The other day someone on MCO mentioned a tool with a set of Torx sizes for $9.99 at Home Depot. I went down and bought the tool today.

Everybody should have this tool. Buying them one by one is disgustingly expensive. This one tool has sizes T-9 through T-40, and should be good for most fasteners you will encounter. The brand is "Husky" and is actually much better than it appears in this cheesy generic picture. I was amused to see that the handle is actually assembled with Allen bolts.

I was doing a search and came across this topic.

I got the exact same tool at Home Depot. So far, it works on the downtubes on the dash, the intercooler cover and the center mounted third brake light.

Gorilla Grips are pretty good also, and, just like their name implies, they're very rugged.

I picked up a multi-set of very similar items at Sears. I have 1 basically identical set of Torx, another of metric allen keys and a 3rd of "standard" allen keys. They're all Craftsman brand, and I think I paid about $15 on sale for them all.

Harbor Fright sells them for a few bucks as well. I don't use it as my primary set but when I'm on the road, it's nice to have it with me.

Man, do I love tools! I have bother sockets, and all in one sets! The sockets come in handy when you need to torque things down etc and the all in one is good when you just need to to tighten or lossen basic things. The right tool makes things much easier and well worth the money spent!

On Ebay I picked up a set of Snap-On-- 1/4" drivers. They sell on Ebay for a small fraction of the truck price.

Love my tools!

Even better than a set of TORX screwdrivers is a set of Security TORX (aka Tamper Resistant TORX or TORX TR) screwdrivers.

They're the same as TORX screwdrivers except that they have a hole in the middle of the bit. Why? Because sometimes (Note: not necessarily on the MINI) you may run across Security TORX screws, which have a pin in the middle of them, making it impossible to remove the screw unless you have a Security TORX screwdriver.

Bonus - Security TORX screwdrivers can still be used for regular TORX screws too.

Here's a link to what I'm talking about:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TORX

(look down at the top of the "Variants" section)

Of course, finding a place that has and will sell you Security TORX screwdrivers is another matter. I searched all over the DC area in the late 90s and I finally found ONE store that had a set and let me buy them. It wasn't easy! LOL

That's because they're not OEM.

I like the 'guy's jewelry box' concept.

an unusual size of Torx screwdriver

I'm trying to disassemble part of my dashboard, and it calls for a Torx driver of size T33. Anyone know where I might be able to find such an odd size? I've looked in several stores (including the big ones) and I've searched online... can't find it anywhere. (Incidentally, I'm in the Washington DC area, in case anyone happens to know a local source--but any place that sells by mail would be great, too.) Thanks in advance!

T33?? Are you sure it's not a T30? I've only run into std. sizes - 10,15,20,25,30,50
