Drivetrain Electric Water Pump
Electric Water Pump
Anyone get the electric water pump from 1FastMini? If you have it, how do you like it?

Good question
I find the concept of removing a known problem with the water pump gears plus the small gain in hp to be interesting. My MCS is down for the winter - major upgrades - and it's just something I have been considering. However, with limited real world feedback and a price of $900, I think it will stay just one of those interesting concepts.
Haven't heard of that one - guess I better do a search.

Man you are a trip this pump is totally custom made for the MINI.
If you want hoses running all through out your engine compartment go wit a Mezeire pump but by the time you buy all the hoses and fittings it will cost more.
Our pump uses the factor radiator Hose.

I run electric on the race car. All I can say is do yourself a favor and just leave the cooling system stock. HP gains from freeing up the SC to loading up the Alt is close to nil. I'm not aware of "known problem with the water pump gears" in general. Is this just an issue with your car or all R53s?

GotMINI
I just got the 1fastmini electric water pump put on '04 MINI (50k), my gears were missing 4 teeth and it was a cheaper alternative to a new supercharger which, at some point, will need to be replaced again when those gears break again - great job by mini to build a WP that fails and has no preventive maintenance.... I would expect that on a 18k car but not the price we pay for the MINI's. So far so good though, I did some other modifications (took off/put on) so I do not notice any HP difference at the moment but it runs smooth as silk now.

I put an electric on my camaro when the stock died... the car ran cooler in the texas heat. I am planning on this mod as my miles increase more... I think the magic number for WP gear failure is close to 100K...
1fastMini's design looks sound.

I don't see it being any benefit for a street car, .... maybe a full out race car. But it's just another thing to go wrong where as the factory pump "seems" to be just fine.
My factory pump is off mainly due to making room for my intake. And yes, I felt it would be a beneficial thing to have when I built the car. No real problems, but we are still looking into this as a possible issue for cooling problems.
Anyway, if you are building a D-mod race car then it's really up to you Greg. If you don't need the room and can keep the cooling as much factory as you can you might be happier. Any aftermarket system is just something else that you have to worry about, and that does not win races. Not sure what I would do 'again' at this point.
For a street car I just don't really see the benefit. It's an electric pump. They can only last so long. Then you need to buy a new one.
BUT, yes, it does hit me that I truly don't know much about this gear issue and just how common it is. I don't follow much of what goes on with these cars these days.
greg: you don't follow what goes on because your car doesn't have the same issues as a stock car. that is exactly why i asked the question to you. i'm still in the "due dilligence" stage of the build....memorizing RCVD and your build thread!
back on topic: i think that i, too, will need an electric water pump and look forward to gnaster's review.
I can take pics for you if you think you would have hoses running all over the place. 900 dollars for an electric weater pump is ridiculous...come on. You and I both know it. I know your trying to make a buck but that is just too much. Thats cool it uses the stock setup and some people might want to spend a small fortune on it...but your already treading on a market that is micro for this mod.....

Post pics please
If your just hitting me up for pics cause Im throwing out my opinion I am not inclined to do so. I need to get my own car running...
If you truly want pics...I will get you them in the next day or so. Nothing special....pump is mounted where the Cooper intake is and you have a few hoses and some wiring. Thats about it...
