What might be the cause?

The iPod adapter worked well for about one week, then cut on and off for the second week and now nothing at all.

I thought I might bypass the adapter and use the Aux which would also allow me to use all of the iPod functions...it doesn't work either.

All other HK function work perfectly and the new Ipod touch works everywhere else. I tried a few other iPods and these do not work either.

I did not use either the adapter or the Aux for 138K miles...if this matters. The car has 144K miles on it now.

Try AUX without any charger you might be using. But if the factory interface isn't working either, there's perhaps other problems - hopefully just a loose connector behind the HU
