2 Spoke to 3 Spoke R50 Steering Wheel Conversion

Hi all.

I have a question regarding a 2 spoke to 3 spoke steering wheel conversion on my '04 R50 Cooper. The car came with the standard 2 spoke steering wheel with M/F controls. After having owned the car for about 2 years, the steering wheel 'leather' has peeled almost entirely from the 9 o'clock to 3o'clock position and is in dire need of replacement. After repeated failed attempts to get my regular dealer to replace the wheel under warranty, I have decided to put the JCW 3 spoke leather steering wheel in the car. I now have the new JCW wheel, a new 3 spoke compatible airbag and the the new M/F controls from another regular 3 spoke.

After taking all of these parts to a my dealer in SoCal for installation, the MA is telling me it is not possible to connect the wiring between the 2 spoke connector on the car and the three spoke wiring. Having researched this on this site, I found a link that provides the steps necessary to perform this conversion.

The OEMParts link and part lists at this site for show a part number 61316933899 (item #6) as the appropriate connector to use for this effort. I believe I have this connector as part of the 3 spoke MF control system.

What I am missing in this? My regular dealer seems to think this is not possible and I would like to have all these modifications installed in the car. Any ideas to what parts I am missing or recommendations as to who can install this in SoCal would be greatly recommended!

Thanks!

Let me tell you, it is very expensive!!!

I have a how-to on my web page, listing all the parts I needed, as well as how much it all cost. Hope you're sitting down for this...

I am happy to say that Danny at MiniCorsa in North Hollywood accomplished the last piece of this puzzle this morning. I now have a JCW Steering Wheel, complete with the 3 spoke MF/IO in place of a 2 spoke MF/IO on an '04 R50. Initial feel is spectacular. Pictures (soon to follow) do not begin to convey the difference.

Thanks to all (especially jonnieoh) for providing the step by step instructions and to all others for pointing me to the right people and insuring I got all the right parts.
