How to prep a new MINI for Clear bra install
How to prep a new MINI for Clear bra install
I have read through numerous posts trying to find info on what I should/shouldn't do to a new MINI prior to Paint Protection Film (PPF) installation.
I think most of the info is out there but buried in various threads that were started to discuss other topics. I thought starting this would make it easier for new owners (me) to find the info they need.
That said, I don't have the answers but I think the absolutely basic steps would be to wash and claybar.
I am not sure if I should be doing any paint polishing before the install. Would that entirely depend on the condition of the paint (swirls, etc)?
I am concerned about PPF and cosmolene (sp?). I know some cars "weep" this waxy substance for a period of time if it was not completely removed at the VDC. How soon did/would you know if you were going to have this problem and will it damage the PPF?
I just want to make sure I don't neglect doing something that I can't do once the paint is covered in PPF.

Claying the paint wouldn't hurt, and neither would polishing, as long as you use a "pure" polish that doesn't leave anything behind afterwards (If the polish bottle says "paint shop safe" or "paintable", it's safe to use.) I wouldn't worry about the polishing unless you have visible defects, though.
The film installer will clean the paint of any waxes or oils, so you don't have to worry about that. Just don't apply any waxes or sealants that would make the installer's job harder and you'll be fine.

A good wash, and claybar are a must before any clearbra material is installed. If there are any swirls those should be polished out first also. If there are any paint chips, they need to be dealt with.
As to the cosmolene, it is more of an issue under the bonnet, around doors and hatches, hinges , nooks and crannies, not so much on the body panels.
