R56 resetting the oil change meter
resetting the oil change meter
After changing the oil for the 2nd time in our 2007 mcs, I noticed the mileage for the next change did not update. Is it possible do reset the mileage for the next change or does the dealer have to update? We live 3 hours from the dealer so it's not really convienent to stop by and the car only has 14,000 miles so it's not really due for anyting else.
It's better to let the meter continue to count down on its own, since the dealer won't perform any scheduled maintenance until the meter says it's due.
If you reset the meter each time you change the oil yourself, then you'll never "come due" for anything according to the meter, and the dealer won't perform any of the free scheduled maintenance.
Most owners just change the oil themselves without resetting the meter, and then when the meter finally reaches zero, they take it in to the dealer for the free service and let the dealer reset the meter.
If the meter were only keeping track of the oil, it wouldn't really matter, but there are other services that the dealer will perform, and you want them to do these for free.

As Scott says, don't reset it for an oil change. The counter is for the first service, not just an oil change. Other things are included. Also, you need to have that service to maintain your warranty.
