Tinted Versus Blacked-Out Trim

When I first saw this early picture of the new JCW coupe, I thought they had used a dark chrome verses a bright chrome. Apparently it's just the way the picture was processed, but its had me thinking that it would be a nice way to tone down the exterior chrome without going to a carbon fibre or full black-out look.

For those of you that have experience with vinyl wraps, would the semi-transparent vinyls work well in an application like this?

Motor Head - I've been thinking the same thing about the black chrome, I like the contrast of the chrome, but I'd like to get the car darker overall. I was planning on trying out a smoked vinyl if I could find it, maybe experimenting with the spay tint I've seen people here use for their marker lights.

I've been thinking on how to get my wheels the same treatment, chromed and then a dark-tinted clear powder coat? I dunno... It's a ways off for me until I pay the car off.
