High Mileage MINI's

Hi I am very close to making the purchase of an 08 Clubman S and before I do so, I wanted to feel comfortable knowing they are reliable at high miles as I plan to keep it well over 100k miles. My past vehicles have been Hondas and Nissans which, despite poor maintanance on my part, have delivered fantastic reliablility at well over 100. Can I expect this same reliability from a MINI?

I love the car, but I am also notoriously hard on my vehicles and do not feel like "babying" a vehicle that I will put easily 20K per year on. Is the MINI up to it or should I just grab another Accord that I know is up to the torture.

I'd love to hear from anyone with high miles! Thanks

I can't offer you any anecdotal tales of my high miles, since I have my S on order right now. But I do have a similar brand history with vehicles. We're not tough on ours, but have always bought new and driven them until they die. Our 95 Corolla has 166k and is still going strong, and we had a Civic that was great at 130k when we sold it. Also had a Toyota truck with 255k before it died of old age.

So I can relate to your reliability concerns. But there were a few things that pushed us over, and we're glad we did

1) The car itself. As you probably know from a test drive, not many cars give you that grin.
2) The 36 months of dealer maintenance coverage. Paying sticker was a drag, but not having to shell out for oil changes, etc is going to be nice.
3) The resale value. I look at it as a 3 year test drive in some ways. Any problems and we're covered, and if we are dissatisfied enough after that time(sure hope not) we can sell the vehicle and still probably do very well with the high residuals.

Let us know what you decide, and if you make the plunge, what your specs are....good luck!

I have 3 friends that have MINI's with over 150k miles on them, and they all are still in fantastic running condition. Furthermore, a low-mileage [under 50k miles] '02 MCS still holds about 70% of it's original base MSRP value.

The MINI is probably as close as it gets to having a daily driver automotive investment as it gets. Not only is it a blast to drive, but the great community and minimal financial impact makes ownership a huge overall value.

Cheers,
Ryan

Our MCS is a daily driver on a long commute. Picked up on November 3rd of 2007, and just broke 26,000 miles a few days ago. It might be tough to find anyone with the newer turbo'd cars with high milage.

We couldn't be happier with it- I'm hoping to keep it up through 250K, as with our past cars.

So far, the only tiny complaint is a dash/door rattle that only shows occasionally on really rough roads.

dunno how much 1st gen history would illuminate the question of 2nd gen longevity, but here it is:

There is a guy that posts over at MINI2.com. He claims his '02 5-speed MC has over 230K miles and all he has done to it is basic maintenance with no other problems. The fella is 88 years old and he drives 400-500 miles on anyday just for fun. He says he plans to take the car to the half a million mile mark.

Amamzing story and attitude.
