Suspension Repair of shock tower sheet metal
Repair of shock tower sheet metal
Has anyone repaired the shock tower sheet metal as a result of mushrooming. I see quote a few have put on the different braces but what good is that if it is already mushroomed. Seems to me it has to be repaired somehow and about the only way I'd know of would be to "pound" it back down.
As high-tech as some aspects of auto repair has become, the repair of the shock towers remains a job for a hammer and a block of wood. The technical aspect resides mostly in knowing where to hit, how hard, and how much.

There is a thread somewhere here about non violent tower repair using a steel plate underneath like an anvil and then pulling the bent metal back together. I had a plate made this week and did the repair this way. Very simple and I think better than pounding on the metal with a mallet.
How did you do it? It seems that you would have to force the sheet metal down to the plate, if I'm understanding what you did correctly. Also did you have to remove the strut? Thanks.
Here's the thread:

This link has photos and it is a simple repair.
I paid 200 pesos (20 USD) to have the struts removed and reinstalled. I had a 1/4" steel plate cut at a welding shop for 200 pesos and then put a bolt through it and a motorcycle sprocket on the top side. Tighten the bolt and the metal goes back together to original form more or less. Good enough for me anyway, You will need coil spring compressors to remove the strut top mount plate and replace them if damaged. Don't remove the strut nut that you see at the top of the strut when looking under the hood until you have the strut removed from the car and the coil spring compressed.
