High compression engines typically require the additional octane. Your MINI's engine management computer will compensate for the lower grade fuel, but your mileage and power will suffer, canceling out the perceived savings of using lower grade fuels.

Go ahead and use the good stuff like you've been told. Your engine will perform its best and will be happy with you.

There was a major artical in USA today several days
ago on this vary topic. Reps from Mercedes and BMW
stated that ANY octane gas will work fine in there cars
and it has to be that way becouse they sell thier cars
to every part of the world and the higher octane may
not be available. It was made very clear that regular
gas is safe and that you would probably never notice
any difference. High octane seems to be a badge of
honor more than a necessity. People will scream bloody
hell that high octane is the best, but sometimes opinions
are not based on reality.
