RPM: R50 vs R56 (5sp vs 6sp)

RMP - R50/5sp is +/-3k@66mph, does the R56/6sp offer lower RPM at higher speeds

thanks

Here are the results I have by using "Quaife Speed Calc" I downloaded years ago. Just enter in your Gear Ratios, top RPM Limit and tire diameter and it calculates it all for you. Very handy for tire size changes.

Gearbox:- 08 MINI Cooper S
Tyre:- 195/55-16
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Top Gear gives 24.298 MPH/1000 RPM and a top speed of 157.935 MPH at 6500 RPM

Engine speeds in top gear:-
30 MPH = 1235 RPM 40 MPH = 1646 RPM 50 MPH = 2058 RPM 60 MPH = 2469 RPM
70 MPH = 2881 RPM 80 MPH = 3293 RPM 90 MPH = 3704 RPM 100 MPH = 4116 RPM

Top Speed in 1 gear = 39.126 MPH
And changes into 2 gear at 4183 RPM dropping 2317 RPM
Top Speed in 2 gear = 60.801 MPH
And changes into 3 gear at 4516 RPM dropping 1984 RPM
Top Speed in 3 gear = 87.504 MPH
And changes into 4 gear at 5007 RPM dropping 1493 RPM
Top Speed in 4 gear = 113.602 MPH
And changes into 5 gear at 5417 RPM dropping 1083 RPM
Top Speed in 5 gear = 136.322 MPH
And changes into 6 gear at 5611 RPM dropping 889 RPM
Top Speed in 6 gear = 157.935 MPH

Gearbox:- 08 MINI Cooper S

What do you mean by "And changes into..."? Are these shift points for an automatic?

Sorry 'bout your MAC

Yes, 6 speed Manual. The program requires tire circumference (oops, not diameter) to be in mm. So, typically, a 195/55-16 tire is 1950.6 mm.

"And Changes into" means that if you take 1st gear up to 6500 RPMs and 39.6 MPH, you'll shift into 2nd at that same speed and be at 4183 RPMs. A difference of 2317 RPMs. 39.6 MPH in 2nd gear is 4183 RPMs.

In the program you can alter the shift point... say you wanted to shift at 3000 RPMs each time. It'll calculate wheel speed and engine speed for whatever parameters you put into it. Same thing with tire circumference.
