Anything special I should know before I rewire?

Hi all --

I'm rewiring my '73 with a quality wiring harness that has a fuse box that mounts in the cabin. This mini is negative ground, with alternator. Some questions:

Does the alternator require any special wiring or hardware that's different from domestic cars? BAT+ and exciter are what I'm planning on hooking up, with no other hardware. Oh, and my '73 doesn't appear to have a control box that some had. Is that normal?

The speedo gauge has a voltage regulator that, from what I can tell, supplies voltage to the other gauges to ensure they display the right values with the needle. Can anyone confirm that I won't cook the gauges if I supply the speedo voltage stabilizer input with switched 12V?

Thanks for the help everyone. I can't wait to get this the wiring fixed in this beast

Cheers,
Jeff

Re: Alternator, I use a single wire Saturn 90A alternator on a std Mini harness, no problems....

Re: Instrument Voltage stabilizer - are you suggesting removing the stabilizer? It's there to do as you say. Doesn't it have switched 12V from the std Mini ignition anyway?

Excellent, I'll keep that in mind. I'm going to try to use the Lucas alternator for the time being.

Nope, I'm not suggesting that at all. I'm just trying to make sure I know the 'special things' about these components before I rewire them. Typically, I would run switched 12v to all gauges, but I guess in this case I run switched 12v to the speedo, and power the other gauges with the stabilized voltage from the speedo.

Thanks for the info,
Jeff
