R50/53 From VA to MN: Fly or drive MINI???
Ok folks, I need to travel Labor Day weekend from Virginia to Minneapolis as a close friend of mine is getting married. Do I make the 20+ hour drive in my PS/B MCS (say yess!!) and put approximately 2500+ miles on her with lots of fun in between
or do I take the 2.5 hr flight and get a POS rental car from the airport. I hate flying, especially now with all this terrorist crap, but will do it if necessary. Would probably have to take an extra day or two off from work to make the drive.
Anybody done this drive? I've been out to Indy and thru Iowa to SD but not as far north as MN. Good routes to take?
The longest trip I took in my Cooper (sold and bought MCS) was about 5 hours and it was pretty comfortable and fun.
Help!!!

Flying on commercial airlines is such a sterile way to travel, I feel like cattle. Driving you get to see the country and meet new people along the way. And I love to eat at roadside restaurants while driving cross country. If time is not a problem I say drive your MCS and enjoy the trip.
Well I would not worry about the terrorist stuph - ya just cant live like that. That said I can not live with the way the airlines treat people. I drive when ever I can starting 20 years ago. I am in Florida now, I drove here via the Dragon (please see the links to the drive in Spring 04), and will be driving home sometime next week. MINIs and MCS are very nice traveling cars. There were two people in our car and a load of cristal that I delivered to my uncle in GA. Even driving the Dragon nothing broke. I did not press the curves to hard, but was able to hold the speed limit (and a little) through out the drive. The only reasion I can find to fly may be that you do not have the time you can give to your self for the trip.
Signing off now Hello to my friends on all the boards I visit
Going Sea Kiacking (or however you spell it) tomorrow.
Good motoring all

You are going to spend either a day in airports and planes or spend a day in your MINI. I say drive and then you will have the best car there! Sounds like a litof fun!
Me thinks you should make the drive. Right now thee is very little incentive to fly in a commercial jet and I second your feelings about feeling unsecure while on the sky with all the terrorist warnings, etc.
I love to fly but my wife and I don't think this is the best time to do so. Unless time is a real issue, take your MCS for the 20 hour road trek. In fact we will be going up your way (Miami to Virginia) in a few months in either our '02 Cooper CVT or my upcoming '04 MCS. Whenever we have travelled within the last 6 years, we have always flown, but this years we wanted it to do something different and take a nice 20+ hour roadtrip in the MINI instead.
We are looking forward to the experience.

If I had your options, I'd probably drive. Usually, I don't have the time to invest in the drive, and thus I fly.
Nice work gathering opinions...did you expect the majority to go with "fly"
No, by definition, "enthusiasts" tend to make decisions based on emotions as much as logic. Logically, you should fly. It'll probably be cheaper than spending 4 days and putting 2500 miles on your car. Statistically, you'll be safer in the air than on the highway in your MINI (or any car). BUT, go with your heart...you KNOW it'll be more fun to motor!
