R50/53 R53 - new SC drive belt was noisy - now healed
R53 - new SC drive belt was noisy - now healed
Here's a new one. Mini of Peabody was kind enough to replace the drive belt for the supercharger, alternator and such at my request due to 94k miles on the original.
After the replacement, when the car was cold the new belt had a bit of a "chirp" to it, and seemed noticeably noiser than the previous unit. This was particularly evident when starting the car from cold, and would quiet down after 5-10 minutes of warm up time.
It's the kind of thing one could get use to, but my thought was that if there were an issue with the new belt and I left it to run it's course, it could get ugly (SC nose bearings for example). So I brought it back to Mini Peabody.
I learned two things (one was reinforced, the other new):
1. Mini Peabody gives a damn, and has no problem chasing noises. They also stand behind their work. For the Nth time in four years I was glad I do business with them.
2. There can be a mis-alignment of the alternator, which in some cases can produce a noisy belt and possibly accelerated wear. Joel in the service team taught me this, and then applied the lesson - now the belt is essentially silent as was the original. Furthermore they covered the service under "belt warranty" as the car's original warranty is long since past.
Happy camper...
