Thermostat Light?

Hey everyone,

When my MINI is idling the engine overheat light comes on (I think that is what the light is). When I start driving, it goes off, and then flashes on and off periodically.

Any suggestions? I have a service appointment in two weeks, but does this require urgent attention? Should I stop driving the MINI?

THANKS!

Yeah you should probably stop driving it just in case. Have you checked the fluid level? There has been a thermostat issue. If you level is up look just behind the oil fill cap for the leak.

What light are you seeing? The overheat light is just the last red tick on the temp gauge that lights up (like the low fuel one).

I have NAV in my car, so there is not a temp gauge - just a light that comes on. It looks like a temperature gauge (the light).

Just another reason all cars should have basic mechanical gauges. Idiot lights are not a replacement for proper instruments.

Check your coolant level. Let it run and make sure the radiator fan comes on. It could be a blown fuse for the fan. If the engine really is overheating, don't drive it. Overheating the engine can warp the head and cause major damage. And since you don't have a gauge to monitor it, I suggest you leave it parked until you can get it looked at.
