Brakes and struts

My 05 MCS needs front brakes and struts.

I was quoted:

$414 for the break/roter job

$973 for the struts.

This sounds crazy. What should this cost? What kinda struts should I get?

Why on earth would an '05 need new struts? How many miles?

You can get all sorts of good shocks for that kind of money. Folks have said good things about Koni FSD.

I thought brakes (not breaks!:impatient ) were covered under the maintenance warranty. Otherwise, price seems about right for a dealer. On the other hand, with aftermarket and an independent shop, you could do it for less.

Buy all the parts you need and have yourself a project for the weekend. It'll save you money.

56,000 miles
No warrantee

If I were the kind of person who would do it them selves then I would not have asked the question. Also struts need some bigger machines to compress the coil. Big job and dangerous if not done wright.

Ok OK I cant spell.

Actually, on the MCS, there isn't much pressure on the springs. I watched Randy Webb pop the hats off a few struts, and it was very anticlimactic. No compressor, no springs/shocks/bolts flying across the room.
Good to know what you're doing though.

So was this a quote at the dealer or an independent?
The shocks really shouldn't be that much. Maybe 2-3 hours labor for a shop.

Sorry to give you a hard time about spelling -it's a pet peeve. At least I winked.

That was from a local shop. Just called my mini aftermarket parts guy and he said 3 hours laber. $120/ strut.

Brakes $160 parts $165 labor.

Back down to earth. I should do it myself.

Do you need to take off the brakes to get the struts off?

Nope. The only thing the two procedures have in common is removing the wheels.

So what criteria did you use to determine the struts needed replacement? I haven't seen any rules of thumb on shock life for the MINI. I know in the old Miata world, at 20K the stockers were just about dust.
