17" wheels v. 18" wheels

I am about to choose the features in my order of a Clubman S. The dealer said that next week I can pick. On reviewing the catalogs there is a statement when ordering 18" wheels that there is a steering stop added, obviously to keep from rubbing in the fender well. What is the difference between 17" and 18" wheels as far as turning radius is concerned and what about tread width as far as rubbing is concerned? Your imput would be appreciated.

First off, the larger wheel GENERALLY is heavier and thus will perform worse (handling and ride).

The larger wheel also means a lower-profile tire, and higher chance of wheel damage if a pothole is hit... in addition to that worse ride.

Replacement tires will be generally be more expensive.

I'd stick with the 17's personally, unless they won't clear the brakes (or are planning on putting really big brakes on)

You could also go for the 'stock' wheel, and used the saved $$ for an aftermarket wheel... this way you have winter and summer wheels with tires already mounted... just hide a patch repair kit and a can of slime in the trunk... and you get better riding tires that handle better too!

HTH.

Thanks

This is one h--l of a website. I appreciate your response. It makes sense. The 18" wheel looks "cool" but I appreciate the negatives. After reading all the log ins when the time comes for the summer wheels (in that I will use the stock ones for winter) I KNOW I will be talking to Alex about tires ,wheel coilovers etc. thanks again
