Redline oil is good.

Worth the extra cost? Only you can decide but many that track their MINIs will use Redline and change oil at least twice as often as other owners do.
Maybe every 3000 miles.

For street used MINIs, you can also choose less costly oils and they will also do OK.

Some other common oils-

Castrol Full Synthetic (as recommended in your manual)
Amsoil
Mobil 1
Royal Purple

Supposedly, the USA version is different than the European version spec'd by MINI. USA 5-30 is said to be thinner than Euro. 5-30. Safest, to get the MINI branded version from the dealer. Price is reasonable.

Amsoil
Mobil 1
Royal Purple
I have no experience with Amsoil or Royal Purple. For Mobil 1, be sure to get Mobil 1 Extended rather than just Mobil 1 -- unless you plan to change the oil every 3000-5000 miles. However, the MINI branded Castrol is less expensive, and rated for 15,000 miles.

My $0.02 is that if you're going to try out different more exotic brands of oil or change the oil change interval, it would be worth it to get used oil analyses to actually verify if there is any improvement or degradation in performace.
