MINI not designed to take higher speeds... (pic)

SO I was on my way back from a jack in the crack run, just so happens to be the closest one to me is about an hour out of my way but I had the craving...so to make the trip a little quicker I picked up the speed.... to about 80-90avg not to fast... SO I wanted to go for a quick higher speed run to get by some semis so I hit "a resonable safe passing speed" and this loud god awful slap hit my car, it was so loud it conumed the whole car making it so I had no Idea where it came from... so after checking my gauges and seeing I was in the green I decided I needed to pull over went to do a blind spot check and what to I see out my passanger window.... the whole thing snaped off and was haning by its own adhesive, so I rolled down the window and pressed on. anyone else have this issue?

Have you ever had the windscreen replaced? MINI recommends those parts replaced when window replaced.

Sounds like something goofy. I don't know... been in the mid 100's a bit and never had THAT happen. Bummer. I would go complain to the dealer.

Ick. Sorry this happened. Doesn't seem like it should...

Had mine do it on the way home from AMVIV this last year, probably at about 70-75 mph. I had a new windshield installed earlier in the year, and only the drivers side pillar cover got replaced, which is still on. The original passanger side one is the one that came off. I don't think the plastic clips are suppose to be re-used.

If getting a new windshield I would recommend getting the pilar covers replaced too.

Had my Mini over a GPS indicated 125 on the back straight at Road Atlanta, no problem with A pillar covers.

I have no problems and I drive at speeds of 110 MPH frequently. I have heard that they reworked the clips that hold them on. Perhaps you have the old ones.

(Speed is legal, I am on the German Autobahn)

So from the factory, are the covers held on by both the tabs *and* adhesive tape, or just the tabs? If the factory doesn't use tape or other adhesives, it sounds like the tabs on the OP's cover were damaged/broken during the installation of the new windshield, and the installers just put some double-sided tape under the cover and called it a day.

They're available individually from Pelican Parts for $44 per side.

Knock on wood, I've had the windshield replaced by ProStar in both MINIs and our trim has stayed in place. I'd check back with whoever replaced your windshield and see about them making it good.

When installers "SNAP" the factory ones off they usually will produce a hairline crack in them. Thats why a new set is recommended.

Everything ScottRiqui says, is what I have heard to be the case, over and over (and over). Just be glad that
a) it didn't fly off completey and
b) i didn't fly off someone else in front of you

(Each of which happened to respective club-mates of mine en route to AMVIV III!)

As already mentioned, those pillar covers are supposed to be replaced with a new windshield. They are not reusable.

This is a very rare...

but not unheard of issue. Almost all (I think I remember one or two factory installed ones going) are after a windshield replacement.

This is what I've heard, too. A recent installer said they just replace them as part of the windshield replacement. However, it seemingly doesn't always happen.

Speed has yet to pry anything off my MINI. Though, I had the trim on the 'B pillar'? simply fall of during a car wash once. Construction adhesive to the rescue.

I was driving 65 mph into a 60+ mph headwind and haven't had a problem, but I'll keep an eye on those pieces should I encounter any heavy wind forces again while on empty expressways.

I've lost one, and now the new one is cracked. My problem is my driver's door window. It doesn't come down far enough when I open the door sometimes. When I close the door, it slams against the A-pillar moulding. It was really bad in the winter. I've adjusted the windows on other hardtops, but not a Mini. I need to take the door panel off and do it... I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
