MITM ~ Ride # 8 ~ Mt. Evans Scenic Byway
MITM ~ Ride # 8 ~ Mt. Evans Scenic Byway
Our most popular run....
Yes, this is the infamous (or famous) Mt. Evans route. Most of us will do it up to 14,264 ft, at midnight, nekkid, but some of you may wish to make this a daytime route. If so, you will get good pics of western Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, and parts of California. At night, the pics are of MINIs, clouds, and the Perseid Meteor Shower.
The roundtrip is about 148 miles, and will take 3 hours or so without stops and pictures. Friday and Saturday nights after dinner, please allow 4 hours what with pictures.
Note that there is a $10 access fee (good for 3 days) that you pay at the entrance of Mt. Evans. Please take a crisp $10 bill to put in the envelope, and support our Colorado parks.
This ride begins and ends on I-70 so half of the run is benign. But when you get off I-70 and head up Chicago Canyon towards Mt. Evans, you soon discover and remember the fun of twisties. Back the same way you went, this is not a loop drive so much as an out-and-back.
Be sure to gas up in the afternoon before dinner...beyond Idaho Springs, there is NO SUCH THING as gas or any other services. Seriously, there is nothing.
Dress warm. There is also no such thing as too warm up there, at night. Layers are good, jeans, full shoes for walking on the rocks, and a few jackets. Gloves will at least keep your fingers warm enuf to operate the camera.
See you there. And those of you who ordered Goat t-shirts, well, this is where you pick them up. The ONLY place to pick them up.
And if you go by Idaho Springs from 8 am to 4:30 pm, stop at the Clear Creek County Ranger Station at exit 240, Chicago Canyon Road, right next to I-70. It is on the SW corner. There are some FABULOUS toys there, cheap, and some great Colorado t-shirts not found anywhere else.
