DSC vs. ASC?

I've googled a bit and searched here on the forums but what I'm getting is vague explanations and sales info....

During my test drive I saw two buttons in the 07 MCS near the shifter. DSC off and ASC off. (geez, now that I'm thinking back.. I think that was right)

Is there somewhere I can find, or someone who doesn't mind schooling me on, a detailed explanation of the difference between DSC and ASC? Is it like a square is a rectangle but a rectangle is not a square? ASC is standard, and DSC is an option. I know I wanted "electronic stability control" because it saved a friend's life in his Mazda6 last winter, so I ordered DSC on my MINI, but I'm wondering if it's overkill.

Thanks!
