Removing Exhaust tips.......?

Hey there guys. I was trying to remove my stock exhaust tips with another set of stock exhaust tips that i bought recently from the 'for sale' section.
(i've been searching around for a while but it's hard to find any posts about this)
Reason why im replacing them is cause i wanted to keep mine nice and fresh and the ones i bought i painted them flat black with bbq paint. i'd say i used about half the can on them..maybe too much.
BUT anyways..i know you're supposed to use a special tool to remove the bolt..i have the tool. it works perfectly fine on the painted tips but when trying to take them off my car..it seems like it's too small. i tried using one size bigger but to no avail...it wont work. removing them seems impossible.
is there a special way of taking them off? or do i need to find the tool that's inbetween the ones i've been using?

sigh..stupid bolts.
(help is GREATLY appreciated..)

IIRC, it takes a metric (3mm?) allen wrench. Might you be trying with SAE/inch?

Yeah, the allen securing screw (inside the round access hole) should just unscrew, allowing the tips to slide off.

IMPORTANT NOTE WHEN REINSTALLING NEW TIPS: Make sure the replacement tips are slid all the way on to the tail pipe before securing. The first time I swapped my tips, they weren't all the way on, and when I tightened the securing screw the tips shifted, half-blocking the exhaust. I did not notice this until I started the car and heard the difference in exhaust noise, and I cuold have easily driven off with my exhaust blocked. Just be sure that the actual tail pipe is sitting all the way inside the tip housing and is resting against the end of the tip before securing the screw. You might want to also use a small dab of Lock-tite on the securing screw - I heard stories on here about people losing their tips after installation. After what happened to me, my assumption is that the people that lost the tips did what *I* did and didn't put them on properly, but it could have been a backed-out securing screw. Just use a teensy drop of Lock-tite - you don't need very much.
