I'm pretty much a chicken when it comes to getting too close to anything creepy-crawly, but did manage to snap a few of this guy in front of my house: (from a safe distance)

http://gallery.slatterysonline.com/a...l_IMG_3127.jpg

Best guess (from the safety of my porch) is he/she was about three inches long and an inch across.

mdsbrain 06-11-2005 07:43 AM

:eek2:Wow thats the closest I have ever come to a Black Widow.

gokartride 06-11-2005 07:51 AM

Very nice pics!!! I don't have a real problem w/ spiders. Same thing w/ snakes pretty much. Not that I find either particularly cuddly.

Alligators/crocs I do not like!!!!!

I had a real close encounter w/ a rattlesnake a few years back. My one reaction to the whole thing was gratitude. The snake set off its rattle, giving fair warning, and I backed off (I hadn't even seen it). Snake and I went our separate ways, none worse for the encounter.

You must live in Cali? I use to see those all the time there in the OC. Cali has some very beautifully Scary spiders.

I had a real close encounter with a rattter when I was about 12. I was coming up from Oak Creek in Sadona AZ. To get back up to the camp ground you have to cross this 1 foot wide wood plank bridge. Cliff wall on one side and 20 foot drop on the other. On the cliff wall side there is an indentation with a rock big enough to sit on. Only that day the only thing sitting on it was a 6 foot rattle snake.

So as I'm crossing the bridge I stopped about 2 feet from the rattler as he perked up at me and gave me his warning. Unfortunatly the only way for me to get back to camp was to pass by.

So I did very slowly and was not struck. wsheew:eek:
That is one of the childhood experiences you never forget.

I think you should go post these over in the estrogen only thread....

Actually I live in Massachusetts, which makes it even stranger. We're used to your run-of-the-mill "daddy long legs" variety spiders. The example above passes for "exotic" around here!

Still cool though.

The next time I'm in Cali. I will take some pics of the ones I see common out there.

:eek2: Planeguy, you've got a major sadistic streak!

I get some pretty big spideys around my house, but I prefer to leave them alone or if necessary move them to someplace where I'm not likely to run into them! Except for black widows ... I'll show them no mercy ... I squish them with my shoe if possible and dowse them with pesticides if not (this from a pretty bonafide environmentalist).

Great pics, Dragonflyer!

dragonflyer 06-12-2005 10:13 AM

Thanks guys for all the compliments.

I actually like black widows. We have an understanding. They stay in thier corner of the garage and don't go venture in the house and I don't squish then.

Beside I'm still trying to get better shots. When I take the photos I have to set up a really bright light. And if you just bairly touch the web when taking the shot it spooks them and they run back in to thier hole. Than I have to wait a nother night to take the picture.

deemotored 06-12-2005 10:14 PM

The first one looked like the Runaway Bride. Great pix, if not a little scary!

dragonflyer 06-19-2005 11:41 PM

Took some new shots tonight. This widow was quite the ham in front of the camera. I took a ton of photos and usually when I touch the web they scurry into thier hole as fast as can be. This one would just move around a bit and change possision for another shot.

This is why I live...in the city...in Hawaii. But if you want to see something really scary, I'll take a picture of the huge 3" cockroaches we got flying around outside during hot summer nights! the roaches we got here (I swear they really do this) can sense fear...so if you see them flying around outside, they tend to fly straight toward the person most scared of them. Its pretty hilarious to watch when I'm NOT the most scared person there!

i don't like spiders and am glad we don't got any of those in my garage, house or neighborhood!

I'm soooo freaked out! ick!

mikem53 06-20-2005 07:07 AM

Great pics... what are you shooting with? My wife just ordered me a Rebel XT for fathers day. So Im looking forward to a digital SLR.

Spiders are cool... I don't like them crawling on me or inside the house, but I do like them taking care of things in the crawl space.

Neat pics here....

The "guy" in front of your house is a girl. These are common throughout the US and even into lower Canada. Beautiful creatures they are, also do a lot of good.

Hmmm, yeah, NO don't like um! I especially don't like the 6" wood spiders we have around here in Tampa! I REALL ESPECIALLY didn't like the one that was under my desk that came running out over my leg when I sat down!

I'm using a Samsung Digimax V70. 7 MP. It's not the coolest looking camera in the world but it is pack with features and it takes great photos. It's also not really pricy either. I replaced a Pentax Optio. That took great close ups as well and fit inside an Altoids case, But didn't do much else.

I really like this camera.

These Black Widows are not inside my house. The only ones in my house are the wolf spiders. Those are harmless and good for the house because the eat the flys. And we get a lot of those.

UKDragon 12-16-2006 07:27 PM

why oh why oh WHY does my curiousity always
get the best of me? I HAD to look at the pictures!!!!
I hate spiders!!!!!!!
