Why is it that auto manufacturers are trying to create a battery that would last forever and be a part of each car? Would it not make more sense to have a battery that is removable and replaceable? Imagine if you will instead of stopping at a gas station we could simply stop at a battery station and swap a dead battery for a charged one. How cool would the Nascar pit stops be if they were replacing a large battery? And really are people going to accept the short range of electric cars and then have to wait hours before going again if the battery dies? Why not just have replacement batteries and have everybody go to a standard interface? I can change a battery in my cell phone why not for the car as well? Sure there would need to be some kind of power assist since the battery would be bigger and heavier, but isn't it a better solution than having a battery an electric engine and another engine to charge the battery?

I know there are probably 10,000 reasons I am nutz, but I think the auto manufacturers are making a huge mistake with hybrid "technology".

I own one of these...
www.MyersMotors.com to get the energy one needs to run this thing it take 13 deep cell batteries... it takes a long time to swap them out. A better battery needs to be invented before your scenario would work out... a better battery needs to be invented period... /rant on/ Now if we took the $500 Billion bucks we spent on our Oil war in Iraq and put it toward these types of initiatives over the last five years... we would be well on our way to solving this problem, have 4000 more live soldiers, thousands more uninjured soldiers and we wouldn't have $110 a barrel Oil...../rant off /

I guess my issue is with the fact that plug ins either have a secondary engine or require such long charge times that they are impractical. Also with a replacable rechargeable the bateries could be charged at night when less energy is being used, or better yet they could be charged using renewable sources close to the recharging station, imagine if every BP had a bunch of solar cells on the roof and a windmill sign, how cool would that be?

it does not take that long to change out batteries if it is designed that way. when i was at wright state they raced an electric car that looked like an indy car, they could change tires and battiers fast like pit stop fast. aslo bgsu and osu and others had them
