I'm looking at Dinantronics X https://www.dinancars.com/products/s...arts/D440-0136

but would like to know all my options. If anyone has experience using multiple systems please comment.

Get in touch with @Lou@Prototype-R
I’m not sure what kind of “tune” products Dinan is loading, but Lou will perform custom remapping of your specific car.

I'm not looking to get an ECU reflash. For that, I would take it to a local tune shop. Just need opinions on piggyback systems.

Curious why you’re so quick to dismiss a custom tune over a piggy back module? Cost is roughly the same as that Dinan module, and the power gains will be slightly higher than the plug in unit.

They can do remote tunes, no need to take it in. +1 for Lou also.

definitely not dismissing it. Actually considering it for more gains. Just thought I would get some opinions though. I’d love an opinion on the comparison between the two as well.

It all depends on what you have done. IF its just simple bolt ons like CAI, cat back, ect. Then a piggy back will be good enough. If you have anything more than that, then I would suggest a remote tune or dyno tune (best option) It also depends on your budget. Even if you have nothing done to a car, a piggy back tuner can be great fun for the price!

As for my build I will be going with Jan at RMW for remote tuning, due to cam upgrade and header back exhaust and 16% pulley with bigger injectors and bigger intercooler.

That Dinan module is just about $600 and claims "up to" +40hp gains at the wheels. ("up to" means you're likely getting less) For the same cost from Prototype-R, you can get his stage 1 tune, which will get you "up to" +75hp gains. Lou will also make adjustments that suit your driving style and preferences. The plug-in modules, you get what you get.

If you have a bone stock vehicle, and just want to get a taste for what a tune can do for the car, and have a path available to recoup some funds later, I would go for the Burger Tuning JB+ module for $240.

the only thing I’m planning to do in the near future is intake/catback. Maybe a intercooler down the line if I find a good deal.

Thank you very much for the Burger link. That will save me a lot of money over DINAN.

Do yourself a favor and contact "adriancl" on this forum. He has remote tuned a bunch of Minis for NAM forum members including me and I can't say enough about his abilities. Super guy, great pricing (lower than what you're looking at). You'll definitely be happier with his hands-on remote tune specific to your mods than a canned tune.

What kind of hardware is required for these remote tunes?

I was under the impression he only worked on R53 / 1st generation cars.

Lou uses a cable that needs to be purchased, and he will request some pre-tune data logs to be performed before actually starting the tune process. He can give the exact requirements if you shoot him an email. He is VERY easy to work with, and an all around good guy.

You need an MPPS cable (cheap on eBay). Adrian will let you know what is required from a software standpoint (also cheap). He works on R56s also.

I think this is a good choice as an introduction to tuning these cars

probably going to kick myself for doing this but getting their intake kit as well (that billet maf housing is nice). Told myself I would stay away from unsealed intakes because I’m in north Florida (not as bad as south). Hopefully I can find a nice cowl to keep as much hot air out as I can.

From what i gather, the one is a piggy back, the other you have to remove the DME and send it in to be flashed?

You dont have to keep removing and mailing the DME if the tune is not correct or need to make a change, plus I believe you can datalog with piggy back ones? Someone can correct me if im wrong, ive never used one before, just researching them as I am looking to get tunes done soon.

Probably no big difference between a piggy back and a "mail-in" bench tune. If you have to remove your DME and send it in for a tune load, you're basically getting a piggy back tune that is hard loaded to the DME. The advantage in that case would go to the piggy back plug-in module, since its removable.

Even better would be a remote tune, where you do some basic data logging with a laptop, and the tuner sends you a new map to load. These tunes end up tailored to your specific car and driving style.

I would always want to go with something I can change just with a download, so there is no downtime with the car, plus keeping all the tunes you have made make it easy to change on the fly in case you change something back. Even a stock car with a remote tune can make a world of difference. My F250 had a bullydog tuner on it, which made changes on the fly by the push of a button, my hayabusa had a piggy back that I could download tunes from the website for free and change them daily with a laptop if I didnt like one.

One requires downtime because you have to actually send DINAN your DME
